Description: Too often mobile security in healthcare is focused on device level security. Organizations become focused on securing and managing a wide array of hardware devices, and in a BYOD (bring your own device) world, that can quickly become burdensome.
BYOD is supposed to liberate organizations from hardware maintenance time and contract costs, but the unanticipated costs of multiple OS, platforms and user training and policies not only add up quickly, they shift the burden of mobile security to the end user. Best practices in mobile security minimize risks associated with BYOD by focusing on securing data, not devices, and focus on how to best leverage taxonomies and metadata to secure ePHI (electronic protected health information).

Marie-Michelle Strah, Ph.D., is a healthcare enterprise architect in the Washington D.C. area specializing in strategy, information architecture, information security and data architecture for federal and commercial clients. She is the founder of Phydian Systems LLC and an adjunct professor of Healthcare Information Technology at Catholic University of America.
She brings more than 15 years of experience in enterprise architecture, healthcare, information technology management, and research and development internationally, with specific depth of expertise in information security and compliance, organizational transformation, patient-centered medical home strategies and healthcare administration. She has worked in clinical (hospital and ambulatory), social services, large systems integrators and entrepreneurial settings and has led adoption of innovative Health 2.0, cloud, behavioral health, mobile and supply chain solutions for DoD, VA and HHS as well as hospitals, pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients.
